If you're going to do the latter, you should bring the experimentation level up to a whole different echelon. Because of this, the one thing you're going to want to do as you go through the game is experiment, and this rings even more true if you intend on playing through the entire game more than once. Experiment - Your experience in Fallout: New Vegas won't be a static one, even if for some reason you want it to be. Set aside a hundred hours or more if you really, really want to experience Fallout: New Vegas the way it was meant to be experienced.
New Vegas isn't for someone who is looking for a ten or twenty hour experience, or even a fifty hour experience. Some of the game's greatest gems, in fact, are ancillary quests and location explorations that you don't even have to undertake to get through the game. We highly recommend you take your time with the experience, and see and do everything in the game that you possibly can. With that said, journeying through New Vegas will require patience and a willingness to lose time playing the game. Really, you're going to be required to dump time into New Vegas if you have any hope of getting through the game's main narrative, which really only makes up for perhaps five or ten percent of the entire game. New Vegas isn't something you can just pick up and optionally put a lot of time into. In reality, it's much, much more than that. And no, I'm not joking.1.) Take Your Time - It's a complete and utter understatement to say that Fallout: New Vegas is a time-suck.
Sometimes the games were actually loaded by the time I was finished. I used to boot up games on my Commodore 64 as a kid and then go make breakfast. Edit: I do remember long load times in the distant past. They could have balanced this a bit better than they did, but overall I haven't had long load times and I don't have the game installed on the 360's hard drive. The weird thing about New Vegas is that some of the areas are very small with short loads going in and long loads coming out. Unlike Oblivion, neither Fallout game has had the occasional load symbol pop up just when navigating the open world. Generally my load times aren't more than thirty seconds or so, which isn't bad. I'll have to see what difference that makes. But since I rarely play for more than an hour at a time, it hasn't been a problem. I've only put in one or two marathon sessions on New Vegas, but had the same issue. It is a bit strange that load times increase the longer you play.
